Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit…. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’” John 3 v 5 – 7
Lesson Aim
To understand that a person needs to be born again.
Hook: A birth certificate, photos of you at different stages of your life – or one of your children.
Show the series of photos of yourself or of your child growing up, discussing why these particular photos are significant and the memories which they bring back. Then show the birth certificate. It is good to have this enlarged so that everyone can read the details. Point out the various details which it contains and explain how each birth has to be registered. The government requires that we register each birth.
Explain how when we die, a birth certificate means nothing to God. God requires that a person is ‘born again’. Born twice. Born as a human and born as a Christian.
Tell the story of Nicodemus (John 3 v 1 – 21) and how he did not understand when Jesus told him that a person needed to be born twice.
Application
Finally explain how a person can be born again, how they can become a Christian by repenting of their sins, committing their lives to Jesus and trusting Him as their Lord and Saviour.
