Genesis 27 v 1 – 45
Lesson Aim
To understand that sin leads to problems and unhappiness.
Hook 1: Blindfold – Who is who?
Blindfold an adult or child and bring them before two other people. They are to use their other senses to identify who is who. Get the two other people to disguise their voices and if possible swap some clothing. Relate this game to Isaac being blind and Jacob pretending to be Isaac.
Hook 2: Blindfold – What is it?
Blindfold an adult and give them a spoonful of different things to eat. This can be even more confusing if they have to hold their nose or if you disguise the food with a strong smell (most of our taste is based upon smell). Then explain how easy it was for Jacob to trick his father.
Hook 3: Climax
Begin with the story’s climax, Esau wanting to kill Jacob. What had made Esau so angry? Have pictures or words to show wealth, power, family, food and drink, all of which went to Jacob instead of Esau. When telling the story publically borrow and put on someone else’s clothes and have a plate of food to present.
Hook 4: Questions
Have you ever been tricked into doing something? Have you been tricked into giving something away? Today’s story is about a young man who tricked his father.
Hook 5: Paddles
Have five paddles / signs / boards to hold up. Have the name God on the first one, Isaac and his picture on the second, Rebekah and her picture on the third and so on for Jacob and finally Esau. Before the story is told show each of the paddles to the children explaining that there are only four people and God in today’s story. When each person in the story is mentioned a child should hold up that particular paddle. At the end of the story ask each to guess how many times they held up their paddle. Ask the child with ‘God’ on their paddle last. Their answer should be none. In other words the people left God out of this event and as a result sinned.
Application
To understand that we all sin and disobey God. Sin leads us into unhappy situation. In the same way Jacob’s sins resulted in Esau wanting to kill him.
