The Waters of Marah

Man and Child FishingExodus 15 v 22 – 26

Lesson Aim

To understand how God provides for our needs.

Hook 1: Water bottle

Jog round the room and take a drink. The water should have something added to it to give an unpleasant taste e.g. a little salt. Ask one of the children to take a sip to check its taste.

Hook 2: A large bowl of water which tastes bitter

Taste the water at the beginning of the story. At the appropriate time in the story add a branch or stick to the water then with a glass lift out some of the water and pour it back

Hook 3: Water tasting test

Have six glasses of water each with something added e.g. sparkling water, sugar, plain water, white vinegar and lemon juice.  Get a child to identify what they think is in the water. Ask them to imagine what it would be like having only salt water to drink.

Hook 4: Questions

Imagine you have just run around your school playing field and are gasping for a drink of water. How does it feel? Perhaps it’s a red hot summer’s day and you are longing for an ice cool drink of water. God’s people in our story today were also longing for clean water to drink.

Story tips

This is a relatively short story so there should be time to end with a brainstorm of all the things which God provides for us on a daily basis. Many of these will be things which we take for granted and never thank God for.

Application

God provides us with our daily food and our daily water

Moan and Groan Signs

The ‘moan‘ and ‘groan’ signs (see Crossing the Red Sea) can be used with each story of the Exodus. They are a good way of illustrating the response of the Israelites throughout their desert journey. Children will enjoy holding the signs up each week.
