Lesson Aim

To understand that people can worship God wherever they are.

Hook 1: Large stone

Use a brown pillow or cushion and a blanket to lie down for a sleep. The children will accept a pillow in the place of a large stone.

Hook 2: Ladder

Use a ladder or step ladder to illustrate the dream sticking on to the ladder pictures of angels and have the words ‘heaven’ and ‘earth’ to fix to the top and bottom of the ladder.

Hook 3: Pictures

Have pictures of different church buildings and ask whether you could worship God there. Then have pictures of other places (a park, a school, a football stadium) and ask the same question. Jacob worshipped God outside. No building was necessary.

Hook 4: Questions

Have you ever run away from someone? You might have run away from a bully or your friends or even someone in your family. Can you remember from last week why Jacob had to run away from his brother?

Application

The children need to understand that we can worship God anywhere and at any time. We do not need to be in a church building to worship God.
