Genesis 24
Lesson Aim
To understand that God directs and guides us throughout our life.
Hook 1: Challenges
What is the most difficult job you have ever been given to do?
Give the children impossible challenges to do, e.g. get me my favourite sweets (don’t tell them what it is); do 20 press-ups; juggle five balls at once. Introduce the story by saying that Abraham asked his servant to do a really difficult job – to choose a wife for his son.
Hook 2: Compass
How do people find their way?
Bring a compass and a satnav. Talk about how these guide us from one place to another. Use the compass to guide you around the room. How are we guided through life?
Use the satnav to relate a difficult journey which you made.
Hook 3: Drink of water
Ask one of the children to provide you with a drink of water. Then give them a really nice gift e.g. chocolate coins. Explain that in the story today a drink of water was so important.
Have a bucket of water with a rope tied to it, a cup and some gold jewellery. Use them to illustrate the story.
Hook 4: Questions
When you are going somewhere new, how do your parents find their way? Do they use a map, road atlas, satnav or instructions? In our story today, God directed the person to the correct place.
Application
The servant asked God to help him complete this difficult job. Today God also helps us to do difficult things. We can ask him to help us each day when we pray. God also speaks to us through the Bible to direct the choices we make.
