Judges 6
Lesson Aim
To understand that we should be willing to follow God when he calls us.
Hook 1: Blanket
When you begin to tell the story cover yourself in a blanket and explain that you are hiding away from the Midianites.
Hook 2: A pole
When Gideon comes to break his father’s Asherah Pole, have a decorated pole which you destroy. You can use a garden bamboo pole decorated with strips of different coloured cloth , strips of paper or aluminium foil.
Hook 3: Two fleeces
When Gideon tests God by putting out a fleece have two pieces of sheep skin or pieces of beige material. It is possible to buy fake sheep skin from a local market or you and use the inner lining of a coat bought from a charity shop. Have a wet piece of fleece and a dry one. Take out the dry one and tell all the children to lie down, close their eyes and go to sleep. Then swap the fleece over. The second test begins with the wet one and when the children are again asleep swap the fleece for the dry one.
Hook 4: Questions
Which of these is the most difficult?
To give away your last sweet.
To go to bed without any moaning.
To say sorry to someone you don’t like.
Today’s story is about a man who had to do difficult things for God.
Application
Explain to the children that God wanted to use Gideon to help his people. However, Gideon was wrong to keep testing God. We have to accept God’s leading in our lives and not keep testing God as Gideon did.
