1 Kings 21 v 1 – 29
Lesson Aims
To understand that God wants us to be satisfied with the things that we have.
Hook 1: Grapes
Take in some grapes (you could also show some pictures of a vineyard) and talk about how they are turned into wine. Say that this is the drink that most people drank in Bible times. (You could give the children some grapes and grape juice to try).
Hook 2: Eyes
Show some pictures of different eyes. Which eyes are happy? Which ones are sad? Which ones are greedy? Which ones are sulky?
Ask if any of the children have ever had a really bad sulk. Have they even laid on their bed and refused to eat? What sort of things did they really want?
Hook 3: Acting
Have crowns made for King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. Have two people wearing the crowns. The storyteller could either be a narrator or could take the role of the servant. Also have a letter to be read out explaining the plot.
Hook 4: Questions
When have you been jealous? Have you ever wanted something which belongs to your brother or sister? What does being jealous feel like?
In our Bible story today listen out for a grown-up who gets very jealous.
Story Tips:
The ending of the story is quite gruesome. You don’t need to go into detail here – just explain that God said he would punish Ahab and Jezebel. They would die.
Application
God wants us to be content and happy with the things that he has given us. This story is in the Bible as a warning to us not to be greedy and do wrong things to get what we want.
